On June 14th , Rotary Club members Natasha Hughes (President), Maree Lyng (Vice President), Mike Brand (Just 1 Life Project Lead), and Michael Tierney (Project Member) met with Wexford County Council’s CEO Eddie Taaffe, Road Safety Officer David Codd, and their team. The meeting reviewed the 2023/2024 achievements of the Just 1 Life project and planned for 2024/2025.
The Just 1 Life project aims to save young lives by demonstrating common accident causes to 15-17-year-old transition year students through impactful presentations.
The project held five events at the National Opera House in Wexford, involving 26 schools and nearly 2,000 students. Presenters included representatives from An Garda Síochána, Wexford Ambulance Service, Wexford Fire Services, Wexford Mental Health, the Cycling and Walking Safety Office, and HSE A&E.
Survey feedback showed 95.23% of students reported increased awareness of safe driving, and 92.45% felt it would make them more conscientious drivers.
Each year, the program is improved based on student feedback to enhance road safety awareness. We thank the presenters from all organisations and the TY coordinators for their ongoing commitment and dedication. Your efforts are crucial to the success of this project. The project could not run without the logistical and financial support from Wexford County Council, particularly David Codd and his team. Rotary President Natasha Hughes presented David with a Pebble art piece as a small token of appreciation for his dedication to the project over the years.
Next year’s schedule includes five more events at the National Opera House starting in December 2024, with all 24 secondary schools and two youth organizations participating, thanks to Mike Brand’s efforts.
President Natasha Hughes remarked, “The Just 1 Life project is vital to our community, and we are grateful for the support from Wexford County Council, our volunteers, presenters, and school coordinators. We look forward to continuing our work and improving road safety awareness.”
