Rotary Club of Wexford Honors Philomena Murphy with Sassmannshausen Award

On May 27th, 2024, the Rotary Club of Wexford celebrated the presentation of the Sassmannshausen Award, a prestigious recognition named in honour of one of the club’s founding members, Jurgen Sassmannshausen. Instrumental in establishing the club in 1979, Jurgen’s legacy continues through this award.

This year, the club’s president, Natasha Hughes, had the distinct honour of presenting the Sassmannshausen Award to Mrs. Philomena Murphy, Chairperson of Wexford Tidy Towns.

Philomena has been a formidable force in the community, leading the town to achieve a gold status for the past three years in Tidy towns and earning the title of best community group in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Beyond her organisational skills, Philomena has been an inspiration, engaging with young people and participating in critical community discussions including series on Sustainability  “Ours to protect” on South East radio. Her recent act of bravery, shaving her head for ‘Relay for Life’ after the loss of close family members to cancer, exemplifies her deep commitment to service.

Philomena’s dedication reflects the Rotary’s motto of “service above self” and embodies the characteristics of a true “person of action.”

President Natasha Hughes expressed great pleasure in recognising Philomena Murphy as the most deserving recipient of the 2024 Sassmannshausen Award. Her actions and leadership not only enhance the community but also inspire others to live by the principles that define Rotary.

The Sassmannshausen Award is granted to non-Rotarians in County Wexford who have made significant contributions to community enhancement, reflecting Rotary’s core values of leadership, dedication, and service.  The ceremony was graced by the presence of Helga Sassmannshausen, Jurgen’s wife and an honorary Rotarian. Her attendance added a poignant reminder of Jurgen’s impactful life and service.
